Mother’s Ruin 1751 distilling co is a family run business in the UK founded by Craig-Brook Hewitt in 2018. His passion for gin began while serving in the Royal Navy, where he had the chance to sample a variety of gins from around the world. With a goal of creating his own gin, he decided to first introduce his Gin Flights to gain a deeper understanding of local gins and the industry. Through this journey of exploration and learning, he refined his vision, and eventually, Cornish Blue Flamingo Gin was born.
Forming the brand
The gin industry of the 18th century earned the nickname "Mother’s Ruin" due to the societal harm caused by cheap, potent gin, which was widely consumed by the urban poor. Mothers were often associated with this gin-driven crisis as excessive drinking led to family neglect and social decay. The Mother’s Ruin 1751 brand revives this history, but with a modern, sustainable approach to distilling. The brand also integrates limited edition releases, celebrating both local and mythical heritage, alongside charity initiatives.
Refill pouches & Sustainability
Mother's Ruin 1751 has introduced eco-friendly refill pouches as part of their sustainability initiative. These refill pouches are designed to minimize environmental impact by allowing customers to refill their "bottle for life" with a selection of gins, such as the Cornish Blue Flamingo Gin (London Dry), Commander Fox (Old Tom Gin), Cornish Pink (Fruity Pink Gin) and Sea Maiden (Spiced Rum). The distillery had given their specifications to Poucher to form the selection you see above in their range of 70cl refill pouches.
Once the bottle is refilled, the used pouch can be returned to the distillery via any Royal Mail postbox without needing stamps or envelopes, making the process convenient and reducing waste. This innovative system helps the company reduce its carbon footprint while still offering premium gin products.
